The Clean Technology Centre, in collaboration with RPS, have been commissioned by the Irish Environmental Protection Agency to perform a National Study on the Characterisation of Municipal Waste in Ireland.

This work follows on from similar EPA commissioned studies in 2004 (download here) and 2008 (download here) by CTC/RPS and will contribute to Irelands statutory annual waste reporting requirements to the European Commission.

While effective waste management and planning requires accurate and up to date information on the composition of waste this work, more importantly, has the potential to help Ireland prevent waste and become more resource efficient. Through understanding the sources and types of household and non-household municipal wastes being generated effective intervention programmes can be designed and delivered.

Many of the EPA’s National Waste Prevention Programmes have their origins in the data identified in the previous national waste characterisation studies (see www.livegreen.ie  for more information).
