Irish Student wins European Energy Award!

Karimah Gambo, from St. Joseph’s College, Lucan, Co. Dublin, has won First Prize in the European Energy Savings Award in the Multimedia Category. Karimah, who won the Irish round of the awards in October 2010, came first in a hotly contested contest, with stiff competition from 12 other EU countries. She was presented with her award in Trieste, on November 12th, 2010.

Her entry was a video of her rap song called “I Can”, which shows what young people can do to reduce their energy usage and act in a more environmentally sustainable manner in their everyday lives. The video features Karimah singing the song with graphics and pop up images for the viewer presenting simple, effective and memorable messages about energy conservation and best practice.

The European Energy Saving Award (EESA) is part of the IUSES project, and recognises schools and students who are enthusiastic and active in bringing about reduced energy consumption and can demonstrate how simple changes can make a difference.

The Clean Technology Centre coordinates the competition for Ireland under the Intelligent Energy Europe Programme, in association with Sustainable Energy Europe. Bord Gáis kindly sponsored the Irish version of the awards.
