Clean Technology Centre begins new project on energy education

The Clean Technology Centre has begun work on the IUSES (Intelligent USe of Energy atSchool) project. With funding from the Intelligent Energy in Europe Programme (IEE) of the EU, this project is being led by AREA Science Park (Italy) and has partners from Austria, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, France, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Romania, Slovenia and Spain.www.iuses.eu for more information.

Project Objectives
The aim of IUSES is to invite secondary school students to adopt more energy efficient behaviour. IUSES will focus, in an integrated way, on all the priority topics of the IEE program: energy efficient buildings, the industry sector and transport. The use of renewable sources of energy will also be fostered. Another specific objective of the IUSES project is to improve the ability of teachers in teaching energy efficiency and to support schools in saving energy. The teachers involved in the project will therefore learn the importance of energy efficiency for the future of Europe and will have a training kit that will allow them to teach it in a proper and effective way. IUSES will also foster the integration of energy efficiency into educational curricula.

Description of work programme
In the first phase of the project (2008/2009) the partners will developed an educational tool kit (handbooks, multimedia animations and experiment kit) based on previous projects outputs. The contents will be developed in English and then translated into all the national languages of the countries involved in the project.
In the meantime, promotional and dissemination activities will be directed towards educational authorities and other relevant key actors in order to get their support for testing the kit, collecting suggestions for its development and allowing them to integrate energy topics into educational curricula.
The kit will then be tested in 2009/2010 among schools in all the countries involved in the project. A group of teachers will be trained in every country and they will be provided with an educational tool kit. They will experiment with the toolkit, teaching material to their students. Feedback from teachers and students will be collected and the kit will be further improved.
The training course and the educational tool kit will be completely free of charge to participating schools.
A European Energy Saving Award will also be launched in order to promote and award schools and students that improve energy efficiency. A final conference will be held to promote the project outputs and award the winners.
