PPE or Personal Protective Equipment has become a precious and contentious commodity in the fight against Covid19. Debates about how to produce this key resource in a commercially sustainable, ethical and eco-friendly manner have raged. In many ways, PPE has become a flashpoint in a wider conversation about how to make our healthcare systems more sustainable. In the largest economies healthcare is responsible for 4% of global CO2 emissions*. This is a larger share than either aviation or shipping.
Cork’s Green Party, in association with Plastic Free on the Lee, Plastic Free July and a wide network of grassroots environmental groups, have invited a panel of speakers to share their insights on healthcare sustainability in Ireland and more globally.
Panellists:
Dr. Mandeep Dhaliwal Director of UNDP’s HIV, Health and Development Group, Bureau of Policy and Programme Support. Mandeep Dhaliwal brings to the organization over 20 years of experience working on HIV, health, human rights and evidence-based policy and programming in low and middle-income countries.
Grace O’Sullivan MEP is a Member of the European Parliament where she sits on the Fisheries Committee and the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety. Grace’s background is in ecology and specialist environmental education; she’s also a former Irish surf champion. Protecting the connection between human and environmental health is one of her key priorities.
Eileen O’Leary, is an environmental consultant with the Clean Technology Centre at Cork Institute of Technology, working on sustainability related issues with the not-for-profit centre for over 20 years. Eileen will present a summary of the ongoing work of the Green Healthcare programme, which is funded by the National Health Sustainability Office of the HSE. The programme looks at potential environmental improvements and cost savings for hospitals, both acute and community.
Dr. Sandra Green is a Respiratory Registrar and operations officer for Irish Doctors for the Environment (IDE). Inspired by Australian Doctors for the Environment, she recruited a handful of like-minded doctors and together they founded the organisation IDE in 2018. She has represented the organisation on several occasions speaking on the health impacts of climate change and sustainable healthcare. She presented her project on healthcare waste in Ireland at the Planetary Health Alliance Conference in Stanford University. She strongly believes that clinicians must be at the forefront of the discussion and action on environmental protection, in order to advocate for our patients’ health.
Chair: Councillor Colette Finn is a Green Party councillor elected to represent the people of Cork City South West. She commenced her working career as a Medical Laboratory Scientist. She holds an MA in Healthcare Management (IPA) and a DBA in (Business Economics) (UCC). She has extensive board experience having previously served on the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland. Her areas of interest are change management and community development. She is passionate about the greater participation of women in senior decision making.
